Vaudeville venue, cinema house, porno theater ­ in former lives, the Aladdin has been all of these. Now, however, it's perhaps one of Portland's best smaller venues for live music, namely folk, pop, acoustic, jazz, country and ethnic. Great acoustics and a concentration on music (rather than on selling drinks or overbooking seats) go far to recommend the place. Patrons know that performers are certain to give incredible shows; many musicians specifically request to play the Aladdin due to its reputation and accommodating attitude. Representative performers include Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Allison Krauss, James McMurtry and Michelle Shocked.

This dark, moody club offers lush environs and a fascinating line-up of events. If you want to drink, that's easily taken care of, and there's even food for late-night noshing. Depending on the night you attend, you may find karaoke, live music performances (often rock or heavy metal), vaudeville and comedy shows, and an adult cabaret/burlesque that features strippers and fire dancers. The offerings may not be to everyone's tastes, but the place has developed quite a following nevertheless.

Although the Dublin doesn't serve hard liquor, you'll never miss it with the pub's amazing array of draught beers (not to mention its wines). This Irish-themed establishment has more than 80 varieties available, and microbrews from local and international breweries are well-represented. Each night, musicians play live, and you're likely to hear Irish tunes along with classic rock and more. Food includes traditional pub standards like burgers, sandwiches, and fish and chips. If you want to do more than sample the beverages and listen to the music, you'll also find darts, pool and foosball to keep you occupied.

Comfortable and accommodating, this two-level club is gaining favor with a variety of Portland's residents. The lower-level venue has an allure all its own, thanks to relaxed seating, subtle colors and great music. Depending on the night you're around, you'll find live musicians, a rocking jukebox or DJs playing all sorts of danceable tunes. Jazz, soul, rock, reggae and hip-hop tempt patrons to get out of their booths and show the crowds their best moves. In between sets, you're free to shoot pool, play darts or just nurse a cold brew. A great gathering place, with both local microbrews and national/international beers on tap, plus a wide assortment of bottled beers, wines and lambics.

Laid-back and entertaining, the Green Room is a favorite stop for a low-key evening and great music. The line-up often includes local bands, who thrill the audience with their passion and eagerness. A mix of musical genres satisfies many tastes, and blues are a specialty. The club's outdoor patio remains functional throughout the year and serves as a meeting place for regular patrons.
